General Information

Bryn Hafren is a purpose built comprehensive school situated to the East of Barry. It serves the community of Barry together with a number of outlying communities such as Rhoose and Wenvoe. It also attracts a significant number of pupils from out of catchment, both from other parts of the Vale of Glamorgan and from Cardiff.

The school currently contains around 1300 pupils. Within Year 7 to 11 the school is a single sex comprehensive school for girls, offering an unusually wide range of curricular choices.
We operate in partnership with the nearby Barry Comprehensive so that pupils may enter a mixed VI form within the two sites, maximising choices of A Level/Level 3 courses. The very large and growing VI form currently contains in excess of 550 pupils between the two sites, operating as the Barry Sixth Form.

The School is located within extensive grounds with easy access from the M4 and A48. The building is extremely well maintained and well resourced. The school enjoys excellent sports facilities and has recently invested in significant refurbishment and upgrades to the building. It is an extremely pleasant place to teach and for pupils to study.

Departments are well resourced with generous capitation levels, good LSA support and well decorated and furnished classrooms. School has made massive investment in ICT in recent years with all classrooms having access to PC and projectors, many having interactive whiteboards and additional facilities. There are over 500 curriculum PCs available for pupils’ use in both classrooms and suites. There is an excellent Learning Resource Centre with a wide range of books, audio, video and PC resources.

The school enjoys excellent and improving examination results. In fact, the examination results at all Key Stages have improved significantly ahead of national gains for the last 7 years. Almost all indicators, at all Key Stages, are Benchmarked 1 with our GCSE results in 2010 being 65%, a rise of 7% over the previous year. These gains have been the result of imaginative and creative teaching and assessment and delivery of appropriate curricular opportunities to maximise the potential of our pupils.

The school is fully committed to the development of its staff and sees well delivered CPD opportunities as one of the keys to its success. Governors invest significantly in staff development above that level provided by Government grant. We are proud holders of a wide number of nationally recognised awards including, the ICT Quality Mark, Investors in People, CareersWales Quality Mark and the Welsh Secondary Schools’ Award.
