In recent years science has featured frequently in the media whether it be with the development of the Large Hadron Collider and the hunt for the Higgs boson particle, or the pioneering medical techniques that have led to the creation of a jaw bone and a trachea from stem cells.
In the UK, science is recognised as a core subject and as such, all children must study science in years 7-11.
In years 7-9 pupils are taught combined science where they focus on all aspects of science, with an emphasis on developing scientific skills. Once pupils move into years 10-11, science is taught by subject specialists and separated into the three component disciplines.
At Bryn Hafren, the science team comprises of nine specialist teachers, all dedicated to making science interesting and accessible to all. The science teachers have established a positive learning environment where curiosity and inquisition are nurtured and developed with an aim to create young women who are skilled in the practices of science and who can achieve their potential in this subject area.
The science department comprises of 8 specialist laboratories and 4 prep rooms. The science department has invested large amounts of money in new resources to support, and enrich the students' learning experience. These resources include data projectors for the laboratories, interactive white boards, high-quality student microscopes, a colorimeter, data loggers, educational software and molecular modelling apparatus.
